Calls-to-Action on Banners and Buttons

Fadtastic has a nice article looking at the rationale behind different approaches to implementing calls-to-action on banners and buttons (with lots of examples).

This reminds me of a post I did a while back comparing examples of banner ads. Interestingly, back when I posted my collection of banner ads, "click here" wasn't the dominant call-to-action phrase. There seemed to be a lot more variety.

I wonder why things seem to have changed since — is "click here" simply that much more effective?

Click hear does tell the user exactly what to do!!

though i hate being told "CLICK HEAR" i think people just like being told what to do, then again theres always the "Oh i wonder what this does" factor to consider!

same opinion as Jermayn Parker.

Click here has always been the standard call to action everyone uses. I know there is more call to action phrases to use. I think maybe click here is the one that gets the most responses from users compared to the others.
