A $6M website
A recent BBC news article writes that the British government spent £94M last year developing and running websites.
This includes £4M spent on developing the UK Trade and Investment website alone — a site that averages 28,000 visitors a month.
Hopefully some of those visits resulted in sizable investments in the UK economy, because I can't begin to understand how so much money could be spent on a single website.

Same as here in Hungary! If a government orders a website development from any company, that company will calculate a price and multiply that with a hundred or more. That's how it works everywhere. It would be more efficient if the government would establish a web development company for itself where they collect maybe 20-30 talented people with a good salary.

I bet if you were one of the agencies charging that much for a web site, you would all of a sudden come up with a plethora of valid reasons why it costs so much.

that's ridiculous though that government is so stupid that it doesn't shop around when it comes to almost anything it seems.
@!nso I'm sure they did come up with plenty of valid reasons, but it doesn't make it right. that company is basically stealing from their own people, the taxpayers.

It happened in France as well quite a lot - sometimes it's because of pure incompetence, sometimes it's downright gangsterism - buying political favours, political party funding, etc.

Seems a bit excessive but with server costs and paying writers it could quickly climb the cost ladder. That number does seem a big high however.

Though we would all like to be able to do our own website designing, we all aren't able to, whether we just don't understand the many various elements or we just don't have the time; the use of a top website design company is a must have. Just any website design company will not do; there are various things that can make a web design company a best web design company that will provide the exact services you need to the exact specifications you provide and request.

There is a plethora of reasons to spend that kind of money on a website. As a web development firm myself I know what goes into a website. It is actually nice to see that people and companies are spending what should be paid out to the programmers and workers on these sites. I can't wait for the days of the freelancer under cutting the market.
Programming is a highly wanted skill... people should pay what it is worth, not what they want to pay for it.
Just my 0.02.

Why don't government in all countries select excellent designers and developers for their website needs.. so that experienced web designer will get a job from government rite...

I would say that qualifies as "waste, fraud, and abuse"! I cannot imagine any website that is worth that kind of price. The thing is, it doesn't look any better than a $1200 one...

Its amazing to read that this much amount has been utilized for website development.
but i can say that today website design and development is not only one thing, this include dedicated hosting and seo and ppc.
The genuineness of the proposal cost can be evaluated only on the basis of the stuffs included on proposal.

I don't think any country is any different. In Ireland a government site was just lauched. The site itself looks like a customised wordpress install. All this for €40,000....

At our state the government has its own webdesigners and the government is paying them Rs. 5,00,000/- per month in total but when it comes to development of website with corporate image it hires private firms who charge them almost more than Rs. 5,00,000/- per website. Can't understand what the designers of government doing?
