I enjoyed this post by Golden Krishna on the Cooper blog about how error messages are becoming increasingly less useful in helping you identify what has gone wrong.
Fortunately, some suggestions on writing good error messages are included towards the end, including this one from UXmatters.

I couldn't agree more with this!
I really hate seeing cutesy error messages when something I need to do is malfunctioning. I'd also much rather some relevant information as opposed to a cute picture or funny tagline.
Great concept.

Agreed. There's a fine line between friendly layman terminology and actually explaining what the problem is without being geekazoid. Good article.
